Chalets du Moulin
64240 La Bastide Clairence, Aquitaine, France

Six self-contained (30sqm) chalets, each sleeping 2 adults and situated on the hillside amongst the trees next to our 16th century watermill on the River Arberoue and in the heart of the Basque Countryside. The 10 x 3m heated swimming pool is in the middle of the chalets with stunning views over the surrounding countryside.

Each chalet faces a slightly different angle giving each outlook and verandah privacy. The property is located in a small hamlet just outside the village of La Bastide Clairence, voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. All local amenities are available in the village which is a 5 minute drive away.

There is a bar in the hamlet within easy walking distance. Although we are in lovely peaceful countryside with the Pyrenees as a backdrop and just the sound of the river below, the Basque coastline, famous for its excellent surf conditions, is only a 25 minute drive away. The ideal base for exploring the Basque Country. Free wifi.

Please note that rentals in July and August are by the week only from Saturday to Saturday. Our chalets are for couples only, we do not accept children.

What to do
The Basque region has arguably the best surf in Europe and in summer the water is warm enough to surf without a wetsuit. The sandy beaches are perfect for families. In winter, the Pyrenees are easily accessible with the nearest ski resort only 1 hour away. Because the house is on the river, canoeing, walking, fly fishing and cycling are the easiest way to enjoy the amazing scenery. The Basque region is also arguably the best region for gastronomy in France.

Biarritz
The mill is ideally situated for discovering the dramatic Basque or Landes coastline. The beaches of Biarritz and surrounding beaches of Anglet, Bidart and Guethary are just 30 minutes drive from the mill. Biarritz is our favourite coastal town in the area and we believed it deserved a page of its own.

History
Formerly a whaling port, Biarritz became fashionable and glamourous in the Victorian period with Queen Victoria being a regular visitor for the mild winter climate and the local spas. The early 1900s then saw the introduction of the town’s amazing art deco buildings, such as the Casino on the sea front, the Musee de la Mer (museum of the sea), Hotel Plaza and the old train station which is now the festival hall. These all sit side by side with the Bearn, Belle Epoque (Victorian) and traditional Basque architecture. Le Grand Palais on the main beach in Biarritz is one of the most expensive and luxurious hotels in France – it was built for Princess Eugenie by Napoleon III. The above-mentioned buildings are just a few of the architectural and historical wonders you will find on your visit to Biarritz.
